On the Eighth Day of a Feminine Christmas

My favorite Little Women film was the 1994 Susan Sarandon, Winona Rider version.  The first time I saw it however, I was not impressed.  I thought it “raw” and felt it depicted the March family too realistically in deep poverty which showed in the dark somber colors of the wardrobes and sets.  It took a while for me to fall in love with it but I did and still love it best.

I must have talked about the film a lot – it had become my personal classic Christmas movie – because one year, my mother gave me her favorite version of Little Women which is the 1949 production with Elizabeth Taylor and June Allyson.  It seems that every generation must have its own Little Women.

On Christmas Day, the latest Little Women film opens.  I am sure I will see it this week.  I didn’t see the need for this new production but the reviews are positively gushing.  And the trailers look darling.  I think Laura Dern will be a warm and  inspiring Marmee  and all signs point to this being a formidable Little Women.   We shall see…
