On the Seventh Day of a Feminine Christmas

Carole Lombard certainly knows how to look festive along with her pretty Christmas gifts.  I used to think it was my mission to spend as much as I possibly could on each of the loved ones on my list.  But I’ve discovered that successful gift giving is about honing in on the passions of your recipients and then cashing in on what you know.

I thought my mother would enjoy reading a vintage Seventeen Magazine from her era – the 1950’s.  Luckily I found an issue from 1951 and as it turned out it is one that she actually bought for herself at her local drugstore some sixty odd years ago.  It contained plenty of her favorite Jonathan Logan dresses and she enjoyed herself very much as she visited her girlhood for a happy hour or so.

My daughter received a knit hat with an embroidered heart on it.  It will keep her warm and remind her that she is loved.

My sister knows exactly who I am when she gifted me with a charming little hair clip.  It was a sparkly dragonfly, a motif I find irresistible.  And another clip was fatally elegant with pearls and a comb attachment.  Not costly.  Just thoughtful.

A Sinclair Lewis classic came from my brother-in-law, knowing how much I enjoy an American novel and my daughter located a favorite body lotion for me.  Perfect gifts.  Much appreciated.

It looks like Carole has selected some lovely fragrances for her intended.  I’ll bet they were chosen based on how much she knows her family and friends…

Did you receive any presents that made you feel loved?

My 16 year old granddaughter gave me (I’m 74) false eyelashes!!!! I had been mentioning how cute she looks when she wears them! I just love that she sees me as someone who will enjoy them! 😉. Now, she’ll have to be the one to put them on me!!! Haha 😂

Gifts you gave and received sound so lovely. I received meaningful gifts as well; a much wanted book, an antique blue and white pitcher, beautiful pearl earrings. I love your blog posts and eagerly await the Christmas series every year. Happy holidays!

I did! My one daughter knitted me a beautiful, complicated scarf of various tones of mossy greens, a color that she knows I love because it’s the color of my eyes. And hers too! My eldest daughter, as she does every year, wrote me a story. She knows that I love her fantasy forays into the life of a character she’s concocted who just happens to share many of my traits. So, each year, she adds a little more to the story and as I read, I know that she is weaving in elements and aspects of my own life and putting a fictional spin on them to give me some delight on the holiday. These gifts, and ones from a very special friend or two, let me know that others listen to me, know me, and love me.

Yes! A small painting of a hummingbird by a local artist, earrings made of local copper, and the new Cary Grant biography! My birthday is tomorrow and the package smells distinctly of 24 Faubourg, so that too 🙂

Merry Christmas, Donna! Carole Lombard looks so young in that picture!
