On the Eleventh Day of a Feminine Christmas

This was not the scene of most homes this Christmas.  And how wonderful to have soldiers drop by to help with all the new-fangled  presents.  Mother is missing from the scene because she is most likely in the kitchen preparing Christmas dinner for everybody.

I truly missed our usual celebration at my sister’s house with extended family.  And it goes without saying that I missed my two adorable little grandchildren.  I’m certain we are all hoping next year will better and we will spend our holidays with our beloveds again.

What will I bring to my Christmas next year?  Hopefully, less angst about torn and scattered wrapping paper and ribbons all over the floor (Bring.It.On).  I’ll pace myself and not become overwhelmed so early on in the rush to the finish line.  I’ll have more friends over to tea in the weeks leading up the holiday and I’ll prolong the festivities by having them over again before New Year’s.  I’ll splurge on champagne, cookies, and crab.  Yes crab – I skipped making my favorite crab hors d’oeuvres because I thought, “Why bother?” and I’m ashamed to admit I said that more than a few times about other traditions too.

This Christmas has taught me a few things.  Have you learned anything as well?

Yes, I missed the get togethers….but I loved the quiet and non rush pace. To read, to watch good movies, and to enjoy being with my husband. I learned that no matter what happens life can be wonderful !

The lesson I learned this year is not to do so MUCH – next year I’m going to drastically simplify. Although it was just my husband and myself, I went all out and didn’t have time to relax. Too much food, too many sweets, too much decorating and trying to cram in every holiday music and listen to every holiday song.

Next year we’re going to a spa for Thanksgiving and a pretty inn for Christmas – someone else can do the cooking!

It’s so true! It really was a stripped down holiday, wasn’t it? I did not bake several of the things that I typically bake, particularly one beautiful elaborate bread, but I knew if I baked it, I would have to eat the whole darn thing myself! I did not drive through the neighborhoods looking at the lights, which I had planned to do, but I did take on a new tradition, watching the Nutcracker produced by the Pittsburgh ballet, a wonderful fireside version. That is going to go on my must list for next year! Another addition to my new traditions list is to watch the beautiful YouTube channels that feature soft, easy listening Christmas music accompanied by spectacular visuals! I did make time for one of my favorite things, which has not changed despite travel restrictions, and that is sitting in the quiet of my house with just the Christmas tree lights, on listening to soft music and dreaming about Christmases past and Christmases to come! and of course, one of my favorite traditions has not changed, and that is reading your “12 days of feminine Christmas” every year! This is an ongoing joy and I’m so grateful for it! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for our final essay! Blessings on you!!

I love the not hurrying around, madly, for all the things I used to think I needed to do or buy.
    Freedom.

May God bless you Donna for bringing us internal joy.
