On the Fifth Day of a Feminine Christmas

Like Sophia Loren, I have opted for a petite Christmas tree, which is also artificial.  I made the switch a few years ago when my daughter married and left home.  Although I love the enchantment of a large real tree with all its lovely aromas, I could no longer deal with the hassle of lugging it up the front steps and placing it in the tree stand by myself.

I’ve discovered that there is a special magic in a small tree.  It’s really cute and when it’s decorated with fairy lights, it makes a statement that says, “I know it’s Christmas, I still love the holiday, and this is my very own mesmerizing benediction to the season”.

My grandparents had Christmas trees well into their 80’s and they chose smaller ones too.  But their trees were still crammed with all their favorite ornaments and lights.  Professor Wutheridge in the classic Christmas film, The Bishop’s Wife, purchases a skinny wreck of a tree for his discombobulated apartment.  Also think of Charlie Brown and his soulful but ghostly tree…

Good morning, Thanks for sharing your thoughts/feelings. At this stage in my life I don’t put too much emphasis on the tree. I do look forward to the excitement in my grandchildren’s eyes. We have an artificial lighted tree that my wife and grands put up. As of two night ago we are sans lights as our six month old lab grandog chewed the plug off it. Good thing I unplugged it before I retired for the night. I wish you the merriest of Christmas holidays and wish you a blessed 2023.

Love that Sophia Loren photo- so glamorous! I still have a real tree every year (pressured to do so by my daughters who don’t even live with me anymore) however the trees get smaller and smaller every year!! I’m enjoying the Feminine Christmas series and eagerly await each new post.

I am with you, Donna. I have a tiny tree too and switched for the same reasons. Wrestling around 25 pounds of evergreen on my own was just too much. These days, I take great delight in my wee little “lady tree” which, though artificial, embodies my very real spirit of Christmas. Thank you for sharing the beautiful picture of Sophia Loren toasting the holidays over her pint-sized pine. It’s charming to be part of a sweet little tradition like this!
