I Am Cold

Our model doesn’t have her mittens on but I think she’s cold – as cold as I am this Mock-Spring.  Mock-Spring is my name for the very long weeks of March, April, and alas, even May when the sun is almost useless if it’s even out, and the wind and air are still refrigerated.  Her claret beret is warming but perhaps she should attempt the latest makeup phenomena called I Am Cold, which seems fitting right now.

So here’s a new one for you:  remember when you came in from a winter afternoon of sledding or skating and your cheeks were flushed in a preternatural way?  Maybe your mother said “Oh your cheeks are so rosy!” and you ran to the mirror to see what she was talking about?  And there you were looking fresh and flushed and frankly, gorgeous, without a smidge of blush!  Well, that’s the I Am Cold look that is sweeping across youtube and TikTok.  And it’s silly.  And kinda fun…

My friend Karen and I discussed and although you can see videos with exacting instructions, we determined that one only needs a bright cream blush, a light frosty eyeshadow, and a lipgloss.  We compared notes and pictures.  We watched some of the better I Am Cold videos (Lisa Eldridge’s is very detailed).  And then I thought about the pristine hills in my hometown that were left untouched for our sleds and plastic “flying saucers”.  I remembered the stubs of Mom’s bayberry candles that my older brother, our eternal project manager in all things, waxed the blades of our sleds with to make them go faster still.  I thought of the smell of baked pork chops in the oven when we came home at dusk after skating on the small ponds dotted throughout our neighborhood.  I “saw” my red mittens draped and dripping across the radiator and I saw our beautiful Irish Setter, Penny, the family dog, with lumps of white snow dangling like Christmas balls from her underside as she steamed on the braided rug by the fire.

Yes, I Am Cold has been a gladdening diversion while I wait for Honest Spring to arrive.

I actually love this time of year; when the golden rays of the sun are so deceptive. Still cozy weather with a promise of warmer days ahead. I adore your writing as it always provides such a strong visual- feel like I am right there next to mittens on the radiator and snow covered Penny!

    This look is truly beautiful.

While walking the dog today on a sunny afternoon in the Midwest ( it was a fooler ) my look was more tears from the wind and wishing I had worn my winter coat instead of a lighter jacket.
I kind of love this time of year. A very fascinating website called 12 Imprints named this time late Winter turning to early Spring. There are coordinating color palettes to the seasons having to do with trying to match your own coloring. Like the Color Me Beautiful theory but more in depth.
Bright pinks and greens, violets etc. that are cool and clear are in this between time. Winter melting into Spring.
Thank you for bringing this makeup trend to our attention.

Donna, I must ask: which perfume would the lovely lady above be wearing?

Isn’t it funny, the make up trends that reflect what God can give you if you just go out and take a walk in the cold? Lol. I think this makeup trend is adorable, and it is, as you noted, very easy to achieve if you’re going for a low level version. I love your reminiscences about childhood winters when it was all about the sensations of a frosty day and a warm and welcoming home. Thank you for sharing this little ode to rosy cheeks!
