On the Second Day of a Feminine Christmas

I’ve long been enchanted by this image of seemingly the same woman decorating two very different Christmas trees.  And although I love both of them, I understand the duplexity very well.

On one hand, I love the traditional red and green hues of Christmas.  There is a naturalness to the colors and they are rich and nostalgic.  But I also pine after silvers and gold, icy whites and blues and yet, I haven’t quite figured out how to make them all work in one small house and for one small season.  Until now that is…

This year I bought a classic evergreen wreath but I wove it with a velvety blue ribbon and on a lark, ran to fetch a small collection of petite chinoiserie blue and white ginger jars I own.  I attached the baubles with tiny silver bows and if I do say so myself, it is quite charming and marries both palettes to my satisfaction.

Who can forget the aluminum Christmas trees of the 60’s?  Our local hardware store had a large pink one in its window during the holidays and I well-remember the scoffing glances it received.  It was just so different at the time but now vintage aluminum trees are a hot commodity with captivating versions popping up everywhere today.  Anything goes…and I am just so gladdened by it all…

I can just picture your beautiful wreath. Have you noticed that many holiday decorations are coordinated with the home’s decor? Things have changed since the 1950’s and our simple evergreen with icicles and bubble lights.
