Cool Blue

Our lovely model is wearing a blue wool swimsuit by famed fashion designer, Claire McCardell.  The year is 1947.

No Lycra rash guards or euro-tech high-tensile fabrics, which make up much of today’s swimwear, were available for bathing suits in the 40’s, but most of us agree that blue is a very soothing color during the dog days of summer and it’s why I love this refreshing image.  An added bonus is that it conjures up the charm of a seafaring life, drawn from the beautiful Delft tiles behind her.  I just know she is in Biarritz or on a Greek island or the coast of Italy.

Blue brings to mind water, sea and sky and when the temperatures are tropical, blue can help give the illusion of coolness and energy.  Wearing blue on a hot summer day just naturally makes me feel thirst-quenched and aerated, especially if my  garment is of a breathable fabric such as linen.  Even here in a northern and rustic coastal village in New England, we have converging sun and heat.

Azure, cadet blue, pastel blue, sapphire, and my favorite Prussian Blue – a deep blue with a hint of green in the mix – can all add a sense of refinement and elegance and enhance the mood on a scorching summer afternoon.  And there is nothing quite as pretty as blue with icy silver accents in sandals or jewelry pieces.  Blue and silver provide an alluring complement that draws the eye.

Do you love blue in the summertime?

Summertime blues for me have always been denim or chambrey–casual, laid-back, sun-softened hues. I still Think with fondis of a particular pair of “salty dogs”, jeans made very lightweight denim specifically and popularly worn only in the summer. Aqua and pale periwinkle are

Boy, that’s one trigger-happy comment button! My finger brushed over it as I was getting ready to type something and boom, all of a sudden my comment is there, in all of its half-baked glory. What I was trying to say is that aqua and periwinkle are two other summer blue hues I love. LOL!

As I read this am sporting my cadet blue polo (mens RL because the short sleeves are longer).
I am known at work for usually wearing blue.
23 previous years in an airline uniform and a few years of Catholic school blue uniforms. It is also the color of Our Lady.
    Blue just finds me.
Nothing soothes me like our beautiful Lake Michigan, which on calm days, looks tropical.
Many shades of my favorite color.
Will begin to look for Prussian blue. It sounds mysterious and inticing.
    Beautiful image, lovely post.
